Many people wonder if they can have both Medicare and Medicaid—the answer is yes! If you qualify for both programs, you are considered dual eligible, which can help reduce your healthcare costs significantly. Here’s what you need to know.

If you qualify for both programs, Medicaid may help pay for Medicare premiums, deductibles, and copayments.

What is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people 65 and older or those with certain disabilities. It consists of:

  • Part A (Hospital Insurance)
  • Part B (Medical Insurance)
  • Part C (Medicare Advantage)
  • Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)

What is Medicaid?

Medicaid is a state and federally funded program that provides health coverage for individuals with low income. Each state has different eligibility rules, but Medicaid can cover costs that Medicare doesn’t, such as long-term care services and additional medical expenses.

How Dual Eligibility Works

If you qualify for both programs, Medicaid may help pay for Medicare premiums, deductibles, and copayments. There are different levels of assistance, including:

  • Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB) – Covers Medicare Part A and B premiums, deductibles, and copays.
  • Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB) – Helps pay for Medicare Part B premiums.
  • Full Medicaid Benefits – May cover additional healthcare costs like nursing home care and dental services.

Benefits of Being Dual Eligible

  • Lower out-of-pocket costs – Medicaid can cover Medicare costs that you’d normally have to pay.
  • Expanded coverage – Access to additional services, like long-term care and home health benefits.
  • Automatic Part D Assistance – You are automatically enrolled in Extra Help, which helps pay for prescription drug costs.

How to Apply

If you think you qualify for both programs, you can apply:

  • Medicare: Sign up through Social Security at ssa.gov
  • Medicaid: Apply through your state’s Medicaid office (Find yours here)

Having both Medicare and Medicaid can significantly reduce your healthcare costs and expand your benefits. If you need help determining your eligibility or finding the right coverage, contact Walters Medicare for guidance!
