Choosing a Medicare plan is an important decision, but what happens if your needs change mid-year? While Medicare has set enrollment periods, there are certain situations where you can make a change outside of the standard Annual Enrollment Period (AEP). Here’s what you need to know.

When Can You Change Your Medicare Plan?

Generally, you can only switch plans during Medicare’s designated enrollment periods. However, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) if you experience certain life changes.

Special Enrollment Period (SEP) Qualifying Events

You may be able to change your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan mid-year if:

  • You move outside your plan’s service area.
  • You qualify for Medicaid or Extra Help with prescription drug costs.
  • You enter or leave a skilled nursing facility or other institutional care.
  • Your plan changes its contract with Medicare.
  • You lose employer coverage or other creditable coverage.
  • You experience other special circumstances recognized by Medicare.

Each SEP has specific timeframes for making changes, so it’s important to act quickly once you qualify.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period

If you’re already in a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan, you can switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare between January 1 – March 31 each year.

5-Star Special Enrollment Period

If a 5-star rated Medicare Advantage, Part D, or Medicare Cost plan is available in your area, you can switch to that plan once per year outside of the usual enrollment periods.

What If You Miss Your Enrollment Window?

If you don’t qualify for an SEP, you may need to wait until the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) (October 15 – December 7) to make changes for the following year.
