What’s Happening
Mercy Health and Humana are currently in contract negotiations. If a new agreement is not reached soon, Mercy Health hospitals, doctors, and clinics may no longer be in-network for Humana Medicare Advantage and Humana Medicaid members starting December 1.
This includes Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Youngstown, Mercy Health St. Joseph Warren, and Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Boardman.
Currently, all Mercy Health facilities and providers remain in-network. However, if the current contract expires without renewal, patients could face higher out-of-pocket costs for care at Mercy Health locations. Emergency services will continue to be covered, even if Mercy Health becomes out-of-network, under federal Medicare rules.
Why It’s Happening
Mercy Health has stated that Humana’s current payment rates and claims processes are not sustainable. Humana responded that it is actively working toward a resolution that balances affordability for members and fair reimbursement for providers.
It is not unusual for health systems and insurance companies to go through negotiations like this, and many are resolved before any disruption occurs.
What You Should Do
If you have a Humana Medicare Advantage plan and use Mercy Health for your care:
- Ask your doctors for updates. Your Mercy Health office should be able to tell you if they have received any new information about network changes.
- Watch for official letters or emails from Humana. Medicare requires Humana to notify members if any changes occur to their provider network.
- Know your rights. Even if a provider leaves your plan’s network, emergency care will remain covered. In some cases, continuity of care protections may allow you to finish ongoing treatment for a limited time.
- Review your plan options during the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period. From October 15 through December 7, you can review and, if needed, switch to a plan that keeps your preferred doctors and hospitals in-network for 2026.
